About Alejandro Arellano Cedillo
Alejandro Arellano Cedillo is a Mexican-born Catholic jurist and canon lawyer who serves as Dean of the Tribunal of the Roman Rota. He entered religious life as an Augustinian and pursued advanced canonical studies in Rome. He earned his doctorate in canon law and has served as a rotal judge, handling marriage annulment cases as one of the Rota's senior auditors.
The Tribunal of the Roman Rota is the ordinary appellate tribunal of the Apostolic See and the highest court of the Catholic Church for marriage nullity cases (after the Apostolic Signatura for jurisdictional matters). Cases come to the Rota on appeal from diocesan tribunals around the world.
As Dean, Arellano Cedillo serves as president of the College of Auditors and oversees the day-to-day administration of the Rota. He also heads the Studio Rotale, the Rota's program for training canon lawyers. His appointment reflects the tradition of the Rota drawing on canonical experts from various countries and religious orders.
