About Paolo Ruffini

Paolo Ruffini was born on 28 March 1961 in Palermo, Sicily. He studied communications and journalism and built a distinguished career in Italian Catholic media. He served for many years as director of TV2000, the television network of the Italian Bishops' Conference, transforming it into a significant voice for Catholic broadcasting in Italy.

He also worked with the Italian bishops' newspaper Avvenire and contributed to broader Catholic communications initiatives in Italy. His expertise in communications and media strategy brought him to the attention of the Vatican during a period of significant transformation in Church media.

Pope Francis appointed Ruffini the first Prefect of the newly established Dicastery for Communications on 6 July 2018, consolidating all Vatican media operations—Vatican Radio, Vatican Television Center, Vatican News Service, the Vatican Press Office, L'Osservatore Romano, and Vatican.va—under a single structure. Under his leadership the Dicastery launched Vatican News as a multimedia hub and expanded digital outreach in dozens of languages. He is the first layperson to head a Vatican dicastery of this significance.
