About Filippo Iannone

Filippo Iannone was born on 14 February 1942 in Padula, Province of Salerno, Campania, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro on 28 June 1966. He earned advanced degrees in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University and became a specialist in canonical jurisprudence and legislative interpretation.

He served for many years as an official of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, rising to become its President. In this role he oversaw the official interpretation and application of the Code of Canon Law for the Latin Church and the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. Pope Francis created him a Cardinal-Deacon on 5 October 2019.

Pope Leo XIV appointed Iannone Archbishop and Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops on 26 September 2025. In this critical role he oversees the worldwide selection and appointment of bishops, coordination of ad limina visits (whereby bishops report to Rome), and the creation and modification of dioceses. He brings exceptional canonical expertise to the challenge of identifying and forming episcopal leadership for the global Church.
