About Salvatore Fisichella

Salvatore Fisichella was born on 20 December 1951 in Lercara Friddi, Province of Palermo, Sicily. He was ordained to the priesthood on 18 March 1978 and holds a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Lateran University. He served as a theological advisor to the Italian Bishops' Conference and professor of fundamental theology at the Lateran University, of which he later became rector (2002–2010).

Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Rome on 4 May 1998, and he was consecrated by Cardinal Camillo Ruini. He remained closely associated with the Diocese of Rome, coordinating major religious events including World Youth Days. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization on 30 June 2010, simultaneously raising him to the rank of Archbishop.

Pope Francis merged this council with its counterpart under the Praedicate Evangelium reform (2022), and named Fisichella Pro-Prefect of the Section for Fundamental Issues in World Evangelization within the newly restructured Dicastery for Evangelization. He organized the 2025 Jubilee Year celebrations in Rome and has been a leading voice for the New Evangelization in the digital age.
