About Simona Brambilla

Simona Brambilla was born on 12 June 1970 in Novara, Italy. She entered religious life with the Consolata Missionary Sisters (Suore Missionarie della Consolata), a missionary congregation founded in Turin. She professed her religious vows and pursued theological studies, earning advanced degrees and becoming a recognized leader within her congregation.

Sister Brambilla served in various leadership roles within the Consolata Missionaries, including in formation and governance. She was elected Mother General of the Consolata Missionary Sisters in 2019, becoming the chief superior of the congregation worldwide. In this capacity she worked to strengthen missionary witness, formation of new sisters, and the congregation's ministries across Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

On 6 January 2025, the Feast of the Epiphany, Pope Francis appointed Sister Brambilla Prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life—making her the first woman in history to head a dicastery of the Roman Curia as a non-bishop. Her appointment, alongside the appointment of a male pro-prefect, marked a historic milestone in the Catholic Church's recognition of women's leadership at the highest levels.
