Gabriele Giordano Caccia
About Gabriele Giordano Caccia
Gabriele Giordano Caccia was born on 14 September 1957 in Rome, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Milan on 12 June 1982. He subsequently entered the Holy See's diplomatic service after studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. He has served in numerous diplomatic postings, including Lebanon, Ghana, India, and the Philippines, before being appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines and Timor-Leste in 2012.
In 2019 Pope Francis appointed Caccia as the Holy See's Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York, a position he held through 2026, during which he represented the Vatican's positions on global issues including climate change, migration, peacebuilding, and human dignity before the UN General Assembly and Security Council.
Pope Leo XIV appointed Caccia as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States on 7 March 2026, replacing Cardinal Christophe Pierre. As Nuncio, he serves as the Holy See's Ambassador to the United States government and as the Pope's delegate between the American Catholic hierarchy and the Holy See. He is responsible for facilitating communication between US bishops and Rome, and recommending candidates for episcopal appointments in the United States.
