About Claudio Gugerotti

Claudio Gugerotti was born on 7 October 1955 in Verona, Italy, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Verona on 29 May 1982. He earned degrees in Eastern languages and literature and in sacred liturgy, teaching patristics at the San Zeno Theological Institute in Verona (1981–1984) and theology and Eastern liturgy at the Institute of Ecumenical Studies in Verona (1982–1985). In 1985 he joined the Roman Curia's Congregation for the Eastern Churches, becoming its undersecretary on 17 December 1997, and has taught patristics and Armenian language at the Pontifical Oriental Institute. Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan on 7 December 2001, consecrating him a bishop on 6 January 2002. He went on to serve as Apostolic Nuncio to Belarus (appointed 2011) and Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine (appointed 2015), where he served during the critical period preceding the 2022 Russian invasion. In July 2020 Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain. Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches on 21 November 2022 and created him a Cardinal-Deacon of Sant'Ambrogio della Massima on 30 September 2023. Gugerotti speaks Italian, Armenian, English, Greek, Kurdish, and Russian. He participated in the 2025 papal conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV.
