About Dominique Mamberti

Dominique François Joseph Mamberti was born on 7 March 1952 in Marrakesh, Morocco. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Ajaccio, Corsica, on 22 October 1981. He entered the Holy See's diplomatic service after studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, serving in nunciatures in Algeria, Chile, Sudan, Lebanon, and the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York and in Geneva.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Eritrea and Somalia on 28 May 2002, consecrating him a bishop. In 2004 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Sudan, a region in the midst of the Darfur crisis. On 15 September 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Secretary for Relations with States, effectively the Vatican's foreign minister, a position he held until 2014. In this role he negotiated delicate agreements with numerous governments and represented the Holy See in international forums.

Pope Francis appointed Mamberti Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura on 8 November 2014 and created him a Cardinal-Deacon of Spirito Santo alla Ferratella on 22 February 2014. As the junior cardinal-deacon (cardinal protodeacon) of the College of Cardinals at the time of the 2025 conclave, he made the traditional Latin proclamation 'Habemus Papam' from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica announcing the election of Pope Leo XIV on 8 May 2025.
